Strong Zhuhai weekend for Team Jebsen with double podium successTeam Jebsen, Round Up – Rounds 4&5, 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Zhuhai International Circuit, 3-5 May 2013
Team Jebsen and Macau driver Rodolfo Avila celebrated their strongest weekend of the 2013
The Zhuhai track is a second home circuit for Avila after Macau’s Guia street circuit. With plenty of mileage on the hard-braking 4.3km circuit, Team Jebsen knew they needed to fully maximise their track knowledge to their advantage.
Qualifying saw Avila come within two-tenths of pole position, earning him a second row spot for Round 4. His second-fastest time of the session was good enough to also land him on the second row for Round 5.
Off the start in Round 4, Avila made a lightning getaway and was immediately in hot pursuit before the Safety Car was called out for the first time after a car stalled on the grid further back. Racing resumed a lap later, only for the Safety Car to be called out again. As racing got underway for a third time, Avila piled on the pressure but, despite his best efforts, couldn’t immediately find a way past his rival.
However, a confident Avila continued to match the race leader’s race pace and, heading into the final lap, a backmarker gave Avila the opportunity to close the gap. While Avila gave it his all in the closing minutes of the gruelling 12-lap race, setting the fastest lap of the race. However tyre degradation inevitably set in and he wisely elected to bring the car home in 2nd place and collect 18 valuable championship points.
Starting from the second row for Round 5, Avila once again made a blinding start, and dived past the pole-sitter to grab second. He then had his work cut out, both defending from his hard-charging rival behind while keeping the race leader within striking distance. Mindful of the need to preserve his tyres, it was vital Avila drove an error-free race, holding off the intense pressure from behind while reeling in the car in front. In what was one of the most impressive performances of his PCCA career, Avila held off the experienced racer behind him and and kept the heat on the leader all the way to the chequered flag.
With brilliant podium finishes in each of the past three races, Team Jebsen will resume their 2013 championship campaign in Rounds 6&7 at Inner Mongolia’s Ordos International Circuit in July, the same track where they recorded their first victory together in 2011.
Quotes from Team Jebsen
Rodolfo Avila
“It feels good to have achieved the success we did this weekend. In Round 4, we finished solidly in an incident shortened race. I was particularly happy with Round 5. I overtook to take second position at the start, but saw that my overtaken rival remained close. Because I was on slightly older tyres, I knew I needed to preserve them so I had to drive in a controlled manner. This was tough as the car behind was chasing hard all race and I had to keep my pace ahead of his and not make a single mistake.
The car ahead of me was also having issues with tyre wear so I did think that perhaps there might be a chance, but ultimately – for the team and for the championship – it was important to keep everything steady and bring the car home. It’s been a consistent weekend and great to put together two strong results in front of all of our Team Jebsen fans.”
