Team Jebsen Triumph Over Adversity to Stay in Championship ChaseTeam Jebsen, Round Up - Porsche SC Global Carrera Cup Asia - Singapore 2013, Round 10, 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Marina Bay Circuit, Singapore, September 20-22, 2013

Team Jebsen and driver Rodolfo Avila showed their speed and determination to fight for the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia championship title in a short but dramatic Round 10 on the unforgiving Marina Bay street circuit at the 2013 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX. The talented Macau driver charged his way through the field to take sixth place after he was an innocent victim of two first-lap incidents caused by other competitors. The incidents pushed him down the field to 21st place. But Avila kept his nerve and made a stunning charge back up the field.

Avila’s drive was all the more impressive considering he had just four laps to fight through the field: the Safety Car was called out for another incident on Lap 2 meaning that for seven laps Avila was stuck in 15th, eager to resume his charge. When the racing resumed on Lap 10, Avila was off like a rocket and showed the pace of the Team Jebsen Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car to cross the line seventh. After the race, penalties relating to those first-lap incidents promoted Avila further up the order.

Saturday’s qualifying session under the lights saw Avila just four-tenths of a second off pole position, his best lap giving him a third row start. Knocking off more than one second from his qualifying time last year in Singapore, Avila was confident he could fight for a podium finish in Sunday’s race.

With the points for fifth place (as the 2nd placed car in Singapore is not part of the Championship), Team Jebsen is one of only three teams still in contention for the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup Asia title. The team has five podium finishes under its belt so far this season and will need to be at their best as the season comes down to the wire next month for the double-header season finale in Shanghai as part of the Sports Car Champions Festival.

Quotes from Team Jebsen
Rodolfo Avila

“I was happy with my pace this weekend and improving my qualifying time by over one second compared to last year, I think I showed that I definitely improved and that I feel more comfortable with the circuit. It’s a shame that I was pushed off on the first lap and never had a chance to show what I could do in Singapore.

On the first two corners of the first lap, a car made contact which dropped me down from my fifth-place start. Then another rival illegally jumped the curb in front of me on Turn 5 and I had to take evasive action, forcing me to lose further positions on the straight, before I was hit in a multi-car incident that sent me to the back of the field. From there, I knew I just needed to keep my head down and fight through – not an easy task on this track!

The long Safety Car period was frustrating as there was nothing I could do whilst the time ran down. When we finally resumed racing, there was just three laps left to race. I knew I had to charge as hard as I could. We fought hard and it paid off – from almost dead last in the field after the first lap to finishing 6th. We’re still in the race for the championship.

Shanghai won’t be easy, but Team Jebsen and I are focused only on what we can do as a team and our goal for the season finale is pole position and two perfect races. The championship is down to the wire and we must perform!”
