The Le Mans Series (LMS) was established in 2004 and revives the memory of the classic 1000-kilometre sports car races of the Seventies and Eighties. Like the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) it also adopts the technical regulations of the Le Mans 24 Hours. This gives the teams and drivers scope for competing throughout an entire season of races instead of only at one unique event.
Full starting fields with the fastest LMP1, LMP2, GT1 and GT2 sport cars in the world promise high-calibre motor racing. The season consists of up to six races, held for the most part in Europe.
In the 2008 season, for the first time ever, three RS Spyders entered the LMS, swelling the ranks of the existing 911 GT3 RSR customer teams. With class wins in all five races, Van Merksteijn Motorsport, Team Essex and Horag Racing secured the first three places in the team category and won the manufacturer title for Porsche in the LMP2 class.
In the 911 GT3 RSR teams, Felbermayr Proton, with Porsche works drivers Marc Lieb and Alex Davison at the wheel, secured the vice-championship title in the near-series GT2 class.
